POSITION:                Library Associate: Youth Services

HOURS:                    Part-Time Position (20 – 25 hours per week).  Must be able to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

WAGE:                       $16.50 per hour

REPORTS TO:         Youth Services Supervisor and Director

 

DEFINITION

This nonexempt employee is employed by the Board of Trustees and is responsible to the Director and Youth Services Supervisor (YSS).  The library associate assists the Youth Services Supervisor with the planning and development of library services for youth as well as participates in the provision of library services for youth.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists the Youth Services Supervisor with planning the programs for youth.

Conducts programs at the library and within the community.  These activities are publicized to inform patrons and to encourage their participation.

Remains informed about current and future trends and selects materials which reflect these interests.

Assists patrons in the selection and use of information resources and technology. 

Provides reference service primarily for youth but works with adults as needed.

Utilizes other staff, volunteers and other resource people with discretion when implementing programs and special events.

Promotes a user-friendly atmosphere for youth and parents which conveys positive experiences for the lifelong use of libraries.

Assumes responsibility for operations of the library as assigned.

Conducts tours, technology training classes and other special programs as assigned.

Assists in the design and preparation of content of the young adult and children’s web pages.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Makes recommendations to the Youth Services Supervisor on the acquisition and organization of resources for youth services.  The scope and arrangement of the collections shall encourage optimum use.

Develops bibliographies, brochures, and program promotions.  Advises others on the availability and use of these materials.

Consults other community organizations on library services for youth as assigned.  Contributes expertise on appropriate cooperative projects.

Maintains professional competency by attending and participating in continuing education meetings and workshops relevant to professional responsibilities.

 

Participates with other staff in maintaining a safe, positive library environment.

Performs other related duties as required by the Youth Services Supervisor and Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in child development or education with related course work in children’s literature is preferred or candidate must have a minimum of five years or more experience working in a public library.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, programs, the Internet, online services and acquaintance with web design concepts is required. 

Must be cognizant of current interests and trends for these age groups. 

Good communication and organizational skills are essential. 

Must be able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. 

Must effectively work with groups, present programs, and conduct meetings. 

Positive interpersonal skills required to work with other employees and the public. 

Works with minimum supervision and uses judgment and discretion in planning and executing programs.

Ability to apply library rules and regulations as found in staff manuals and statements of

library policy.

 

EQUIPMENT AND EFFORT REQUIRED

Must have the ability to operate a personal computer and keyboard, printers, telephone, projectors and other media equipment. 

A reliable means of travel is necessary to attend meetings and to conduct promotions and programs outside the library. 

Must be able to move materials with an approximate weight of 20 lbs. during consultations to day care centers, program presentations, and youth activities. 

Manual dexterity to handle books, software, various media formats, puppets, and realia is necessary.
